Job Description and Person Spec: ‘Bay Leaf Co-ordinator’

£12 per hour, up to 16 hours per week

12 month fixed term contract. Freelance would be considered. 

Reporting to: Chief Executive

 

Bay Leaf is a social enterprise, which has been developed by Whitley Bay Big Local. The service offers affordable garden maintenance services to Whitley Bay Residents and completes tasks around Whitley Bay that are identified as areas for improvement by local residents. The social enterprise supports vulnerable trainees and volunteers, who gain work experience and skills as part of the Bay Leaf team. 

 

The ideal candidate will be proactive in seeking opportunities to develop the social enterprise, whilst getting theirhands dirty and tackling different tasks. The role involves work with residents, community groups, businesses andpartners to make Whitley Bay an even better place to live.  

 

You’ll be based at our building on Whitley Road but will spend most of your time out and about in the neighbourhood.As a public face of Big Local you’ll have good communication skills, as well as gardening experience and practical skills. This is an important role: not only will you be responsible for solving issues yourself and being a key point ofcontact between Big Local and partners such as the Council, police, and local wardens, but you’ll be working to help build civic pride and encouraging people to take more responsibility for their local area.

 

Job Description:

As Bay Leaf Co-ordinator you’ll talk to local residents, businesses and community groups about what needs to bedone in their local area to make it cleaner and greener. You’ll be responsible for achieving improved outcomes acrossa number of existing projects, as well as identifying, developing and supporting new local community initiatives andresponding quickly and pro-actively to any environmental issues you encounter. Current projects include:

  • Garden Maintenance Services: Providing affordable gardening services to residents in Whitley Bay, who struggle to maintain their own gardens. You will support trainees and help them learn basic skills.

  • Planter Project: Maintaining WBBL’s planters, working to involve local volunteers in their ongoing care, as well as caring for other green spaces in the town.

  • Report and Repair: Conduct monthly reports on the condition of the local environment on a street by street basis, fixing some issues as they arise and logging and reporting others to the Council.

Person Specification - The role would suit someone who:

  • is committed to Whitley Bay and the local community, has a good local knowledge and is interested in environmental issues and improving the look and feel of the town

  • has practical experience of gardening, enjoys manual work and has a good attention to detail

  • can demonstrate experience of supporting volunteers or trainees

  • has the flexibility to work across the Big Local area, as well as attending Big Local meetings and othercommunity events when required

  • is highly motivated, has the ability to work on their own initiative, can manage their own time and workload

  • likes working outdoors and is able to work on their own for periods of time

  • is a ‘people-person’, likes engaging and communicating with other people.

  • can use IT to complete reports and regular updates
