British Science Week 5th - 14 March

The theme in 2021 is 'Innovating for the future'.

British Science week

Saturday 13th March - Design, Test, Build, Record.

All Age Activity: Today everyone may build with whatever they have available to them. You may wish to follow Wendy’s Paper Tower Challenge or you may wish to build with lego, duplo or other construction kits. You may prefer to use recycled materials. Or, you may choose to go to the beach and build a sand boat or something else creative. Design and build in the way that you like to do best and remember to send in your photos!

BBC Radio podcasts:

  • The Curious Cases of Rutherford and Fry: The Strongest Substance. Dr Adam Rutherford and Dr Hannah Fry investigate everyday mysteries. What is the strongest thing in the universe? The doctors put a variety of materials to the test.

  • Infinite Monkey Cage: Does Size Matter? Taking a witty, irreverent and unashamedly rational look at the world according to science. Andy Hamilton joins presenters Robin Ince and Brian Cox to discuss whether size matters.

  • The Curious Cases of Rutherford and Fry: A Weighty Matter Part 1. The doctors investigate a millennia-old query, as listener Emma in New Zealand asks, ‘How does gravity pull us?’

  • The Curious Cases of Rutherford and Fry: A Weighty Matter Part 2. The doctors continue their investigation into gravity, and answer Peter Fraser’s question: is dark matter a proper theory or just a fudge to fit existing 'proper' theories to otherwise inexplicable observations?

Shout out to everyone who has challenged themselves to do or learn something new this week. What have YOU learned? Email to or send directly to the Whitley Bay Big Local Facebook page.
