Join our Story Shrine workshop

Updated: Jun 30, 2021

In Preparation for ArtHouses:LOCALwifi this summer Whitley Bay Big Local is hosting a three hour workshop on Friday, 9th July at 1pm, where we will learn to make carnation style blooms out of old plastic bags and have a natter about how the Story Shrine project might evolve.

Kitt has been making secular shrines as part of their work for several years and is fascinated by the way traditional shrines become common property- informally cared for and added to by local people and passing travellers.

Through ArtHouses:LOCALwifi Kitt hopes to collaborate with local people building a small, temporary shrine out of hundreds of recycled bag carnations. The shrine will digitally house images / videos in which local people share personal stories/ family histories/ tall tales. The project will offer opportunities to get involved in any, all or a combination of: · Hand crafting recycled bag carnations · Building the physical shrine · Creating photographs/ text/ video that will be digitised and “housed” in the shrine via the local wifi network.

Pop along to Whitley Bay Big Local at 158 Whitley Road on July 6th at midday to find out more. All materials will be provided. Please feel free to bring any old plastic bags you may want to donate to the project- any size, colour and condition of wear and tear (please make sure they are clean!)

The Story Shrine will be presented in Victoria Avenue Community Garden as part of ArtHouses:LOCALwifi this August.
