Introduction

This notice outlines how your personal data will be collected, processed, and used as part of your participation in the Community DSO research project, led by Electric Places (an operating name of Electric Corby CIC) in partnership with Whitley Bay Big Local, Northern Powergrid and other consortium partners.

By signing this form, you consent to the processing of your personal data for the purposes outlined below.

 

Why We Collect Your Data

The Community DSO project seeks to identify energy needs and optimise energy consumption for residents within the energy community. To achieve this, the project team will:

  1. Monitor and control energy assets in your home (e.g., batteries or other flexible loads such as electric vehicles).

  2. Collect and process data on your energy usage, electricity Meter Point Administration Number (MPAN), name, address, email, and bank account details so that we can pay you for participating in the trial. 

  3. Collect and analyse opinions, feedback, and survey responses regarding your experiences and perceptions of the project.

 

The legal basis for processing your data is:

Consent – Based on Article 6(1)(a) of the UK GDPR, your freely given, informed, and unambiguous consent is required for project participation.

Who Controls Your Data
For the purposes of this trial, Northern Powergrid is the Data Controller. This means that Northern Powergrid determines how and why your personal data is processed in accordance with the UK General Data Protection Regulation (UK GDPR) and the Data Protection Act 2018.

Northern Powergrid, is the trading name of Northern Powergrid (Northeast) plc (Registered No: 2906593) and Northern Powergrid (Yorkshire) plc (Registered No: 4112320). Registered Office: Lloyds Court, 78 Grey Street, Newcastle upon Tyne NE1 6AF. Registered in England and Wales.

Electric Places (an operating name of Electric Corby CIC). Company number 08073299. Registered Office: Corby Enterprise Centre, London Road, Corby, Northamptonshire, NN17 5EU.  They act as a Data Processor, processing personal data on behalf of Northern Powergrid. Electric Corby CIC is responsible for day-to-day trial management, including participant consent, communications, and payments, but does not determine the overall purposes or means of processing your personal data.

Both organisations are responsible for protecting your privacy and ensuring your data is processed lawfully and securely. You may contact either organisation regarding your data rights, but Electric Corby CIC will be your primary contact for day-to-day trial matters and consent management.

 

How Your Data Will Be Used

Your data will be used to:

  1. Optimise energy use for the local substation through events like charging or discharging your battery or electric vehicle.

  2. Calculate your rewards based on participation and performance.

  3. Analyse feedback and survey responses to evaluate and improve the project. This data will be anonymised when included in research reports or publications.

Your energy consumption data may be processed using technology installed in your home for accurate data collection (e.g., Kiome Energy Management System). At the end of the trial, the system is yours.

Data will be aggregated and anonymised at the conclusion of the project to ensure you cannot be identified in any published results.

Who Will Access Your Data
Where you consent to the processing of your personal data under the Community DSO Project, your personal data (raw and non-anonymised data) may be shared between (from and to) the following project partners, as required for project delivery:

  • Northern Powergrid

  • Electric Corby CIC (trading as Electric Places)

  • Lane Clark & Peacock LLP (trading as LCP Delta)[JW1] 

  • TNEI Services Ltd

  • Whitley Bay Big Local

  • Nodes AS

  • Smart Power Networks Ltd (trading as SMPnet)

  • EV Dot Energy Ltd (trading as ev.energy)

  • Cleanwatts Digital SA

Some partner companies reside in the EU but are bound to comply with UK GDPR and are responsible for protecting your privacy and ensuring your data is processed lawfully and securely.. 

Anonymised data may also be shared with third parties and published in European Union (EU) and non-EU countries, in accordance with GDPR requirements.

How Long Your Data Will Be Stored
Your personal data will be securely stored during the project delivery period of the Community DSO project. 

After this period, when the project concludes, any remaining data will be fully anonymised or deleted.  The fully anonymised data may be shared with others and/or published online as part of Northern Powergrid transparency obligations.

Your Rights

Under data protection law, you have rights we need to make you aware of. The rights available to you depend on our reason for processing your information.

  • Access: You have the right to ask us for copies of your personal information being collected and processed under the project.

  • Rectification: You have the right to ask us to rectify information you think is inaccurate. You also have the right to ask us to complete information you think is incomplete.

  • Erasure: You have the right to ask us to erase, or ‘delete’, your personal information in certain circumstances.

  • Restriction: You have the right to ask us to restrict the processing of your information in certain circumstances.

  • Objection: You have the right to object to processing or withdraw your consent to the collection and processing of your personal data at any time.

  • Portability: This only applies to information you have given us. You have the right to ask that we transfer the information you gave us from one organisation to another or give it to you.
